America shed 200,000 creative jobs in four years, and AI is only one suspect

America shed 200,000 creative jobs in four years, and AI is only one suspect

  • The US lost more than 200,000 jobs in creative industries over four years, with roughly 50,000 gone in the past year alone, a pace and duration matched only by the 2001 and 2008 recessions.
  • Movie and sound recording took the worst of it: over 100,000 jobs lost, nearly one-third of the sector, with employment this summer at its lowest since the 2008 recession and near a 30-year low.
  • Written publishing lost more than 70,000 jobs over the same span, and nearly half of all media job losses sit in the movie and sound recording sector that includes Hollywood.
  • Apricitas author Joseph Politano says exact AI causation cannot be proven: media firms stay quiet about AI use to protect copyright claims, and consolidation, offshoring of production, and social media creators confound the numbers.
  • His strongest evidence is a split in the data: every digital arts subsector is losing jobs while in-person entertainment keeps growing at a healthy pace.

Hacker News opinions

Have you seen what American media, film and arts put out lately? It's garbage.

I basically can't watch YouTube anymore because of all this. YouTube should let me blanket ban any channel that's fully AI-generated video.

There are gems here and there, but then you've got Avengers, MCU, Star Wars, and I don't know how you balance that against any amount of quality indie stuff.

Vague takes like this scream Facebook boomer. There's lots of great media and lots of bad media, that's just what monetizing creativity looks like.

Media, arts, film and America aren't monolithic, you can't judge them with blanket statements. Democratizing content creation just means more low-quality stuff to dig through. My wife and I saw two movies in theaters this month, first time in years, and there's a third we'd still go see.

You're going to begin to see demand destruction based on the pricing environment. That's Bob Jordan, Southwest's CEO, saying it out loud in April 2026, which is wild.

I think a lot of this is demand side. People spend hours scrolling TikTok instead of watching a film, and long-form YouTube is huge too. Tom Hanks was talking about this years ago.

TikTok is genuinely entertaining, 30 minutes to an hour and I'm good. Compare that to a 3-hour sporting event you can't swipe away, or 30 minutes hunting for a movie you quit 30 minutes in.

When I watch anything, film or series or short, I get this nagging feeling I'm wasting time, and I think it's because watching is passive. Reading doesn't give me that. Probably why so much media has comment sections.

Some of these graphs don't support the hypothesis. The movie one shows employment just slightly below post-2008, with record losses after the COVID hiring bump. Movie releases themselves barely recovered to 2008 levels.

Sure, but total hours of content produced are way up. Most video that gets produced and consumed now isn't movies.

The 2023 strike, COVID shutting theaters, and aggressive production subsidies in the UK, Ireland, Poland, India and elsewhere right as California, Georgia and NY cut theirs wiped out a lot of the American film industry. Revenue is roughly flat but costs without subsidies are brutal, so it's cheaper to shoot an American show in Ireland with British actors and do VFX in India.

Why would we expect the 2026 economy to look like 2008? 2008 was terrible and right now markets have been booming so long people keep calling it a bubble.

Interest rates and inflation have vastly more impact than AI. The layoffs started before AI, and high rates mean businesses can't take risks. If anything AI means more output, not fewer people.

That doesn't explain anything in the article. All the time series go back to 1990, when rates were higher however you measure them.

Nobody has money and entertainment is the first thing you cut. Every streaming service is more user hostile, and I'm not paying $15 a month for South Park, $30 for Lanterns and $20 for King of the Hill.

Nobody has time either. Office workers are doing 80 hours a week afraid of stack ranking and PIPs, service workers juggle three jobs, and new grads are studying and interviewing with nothing to show.

Without even looking at the data I bet both of those are wrong. The median American probably has more real disposable income and spends more in real terms on entertainment than four years ago. The data is almost always less negative than the vibes.
