Apple ships Siri AI in beta with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, adds Korean support in October

  • Siri AI, rebuilt on the next generation of Apple Intelligence, rolls out today as a beta in English across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS, and visionOS, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish arriving in October.
  • The new Siri pulls personal context from messages, emails, and photos, reads what is on screen, searches the web for current answers, and runs systemwide app actions; a Siri mode in the iPhone Camera app can split a bill and pay friends with Apple Cash.
  • Visual Intelligence lets iPhone, iPad, and Mac users ask Siri about whatever is on screen, and Vision Pro users ask about their surroundings by looking at them.
  • A dedicated Siri app syncs conversation history over iCloud so a chat started on iPhone continues on Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro, and Write with Siri drafts or refines text on request.
  • The release also bundles parental controls for safer digital experiences for kids alongside general responsiveness improvements across Apple's platforms.

Hacker News opinions

Gave Siri AI a go for basic personal-context stuff. It had a few false positives, but it's notably better now, fast, and handled context well. It even shows you where it pulled the context from, which really doesn't sound like an Apple thing to do.

Are they still running on Gemini? Curious how fast all these AI features will actually feel.

It's a Gemini derived model running on isolated hardware, so it's not the same servers as Gemini and the performance could differ.

They've never used Gemini and they aren't using it here. Gemini and Siri AI are both based on Google technology though.

I'll stay on Sequoia as long as I can.

I'm on Sonoma and was thinking about upgrading to get everything I missed these past few years. Hoping macOS 27 is faster than Sonoma.

I wanted to skip Tahoe by any means and was reluctant about this one. Installed it anyway because my window manager, omniwm, stopped being compatible with Tahoe. Completely usable once I turned the liquid glass stuff down as far as the system allows.

Same here. Two major revs in and there's nothing compelling enough to justify the trade-off, never mind the risk of side effects on an OS upgrade. My Xcode machine will bite the bullet out of necessity, my personal one stays on Sequoia.

At the bottom of the press release they link the individual OS pages, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS, watchOS, visionOS, but tvOS 27 gets nothing, not even a link.

Can we please have one release focused on fixing bugs instead of more AI? One release where you can turn AI off, one where it's faster again. I asked Siri for an alarm at 10:40 and it made one at 12:08, told it to delete, it did nothing, then the deleted alarm was still sitting in the alarms app.

I usually wait until December to install a new iOS, but this time I ran the beta since the public beta dropped. Zero new bugs compared to iOS 26, though it wasn't the big relief I hoped for. Now I'm a bit worried, and I'd like my iPhone 13 to survive another couple of years.

What's your speed and battery life like on iOS 27 with the 13? I have a 13 mini and still haven't gotten over the shorter battery life I saw on iOS 26.

Are you exaggerating? I tried a recent beta about a month ago and hit multiple bugs inside half an hour. Had to downgrade back to 26.

Is this the one that throws out Rosetta 2 on macOS?

No, that's macOS 28. Rosetta works on any Apple silicon Mac running macOS 27 or earlier, and from macOS 28 it's only for certain unmaintained games that rely on Intel frameworks.

The warning dialog I got while running the macOS 27 beta said it will be removed in macOS 28.

New Siri isn't available in the EU and they say there are no plans to change that. I'll probably switch to Android once my phone and watch batteries get annoying enough.

There's about zero chance Google goes along with the changes Apple would have had to make to support the EU's DMA.

As a European in an Apple household, no new iPhone, Watch, or iPhone 18 Pro Max purchases here until Apple stops its campaign against the DMA. I'll get by with other AI products in the meantime.

Safari does in fact feel snappier.

Reminder to wait a couple of months before upgrading macOS. Every single release, issues turn up after launch, so give it time before you jump on your work machine.

In theory that makes sense, but in practice I've never had day-one problems, and it's often necessary if you develop for iOS or macOS unless you have a separate dev machine.

I've been running it for a couple of months and I'd say we're pretty much out of danger.

I always update on day one and no regrets so far. I feel better about the 27 series than I have in the past, except they drop x86 support, so keep that in mind if it would disrupt you.

I just moved my Mac Studio from Sequoia to Tahoe. Massive downgrade.

Normally I'd agree about waiting, but 26 has been rough. Flashing window chrome in the background, notifications firing while everything is disabled, Finder tooltips stuck from four windows down, Spotlight search completely dead, past contacts not suggested when drafting mail. Worst experience I've had since System 7.

I normally say the same, but 26 has been universally bad. This is the point release, or the Snow Leopard edition, of 26.
