OpenAI engineer charged for hiding audio recorder in executive conference room
- A Saudi national named Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, an OpenAI engineer since July 2025, was arrested Friday and charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications.
- OpenAI personnel found a recorder on Sept. 30 plugged into a USB port behind a conference room TV, hidden in toilet paper, with encrypted contents that the company believes were installed around Sept. 28.
- Surveillance footage shows Alfozan near the room on multiple dates before the discovery, though he was not authorized to enter it or attend meetings there.
- The room hosted meetings on proprietary research, product plans, and government engagements, according to the complaint.
- OpenAI referred the matter to the FBI, and prosecutors in the Northern District of California are handling the case as a national security matter.

Yes they did. Which makes me question the honesty of their announcement.
So OpenAI did it to Apple and got caught, and now they don't like it when it happens to them? Either way the false flag excuse is gone.
Would be better to build data centers underwater than giant Faraday cages. Free cooling, safe from missile attack, and safe from some types of electronic spying.
Model distillation lets one model be trained on another's outputs without directly stealing it. The alignment people worry about the model exfiltrating itself too.
Meanwhile if your agent uses OpenAI, Claude or another inference provider, you're one command away from your data getting exfiltrated. Download a file to 'understand the problem' and it's gone.
You can buy a voice recorder that holds weeks of audio for tens of dollars. The back of a TV is a decent hiding place. Wonder if it was actively transmitting.
Photos look like an ESP32-S3 board, probably from Seeed Studio. Not exactly a sophisticated device.
Why make this public? Usually companies quietly fire people and pursue them. But court records are public, and with a DOJ and FBI case you can't keep it under wraps anyway.
