OpenAI launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna, cuts API prices 50% below GPT-5.6
- OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, cheaper siblings of GPT-6 Astra, with API prices cut 50% below GPT-5.6 promotional rates: Sol at $2 input and $10 output per 1M tokens, Luna at $0.10 and $0.50.
- On Zapier's AutomationBench 1.0.6 (47 tools across sales, marketing, ops, support, finance, HR), GPT-6 Sol at xhigh effort scored 33.2% at $0.27 per task, beating Claude Opus 5 at max effort (26.9%, 11.1x the cost) and low-effort GPT-6 Astra (30.3%).
- On Agents' Last Exam V1, which tests agents on long-horizon tasks across 55 sub-industries, GPT-6 Sol at max effort scored 56.4%, above Claude Opus 5's best result in the evaluation, at 60% lower cost per task.
- In OpenAI's internal factuality test built from ChatGPT conversations where users flagged errors, GPT-6 Sol makes about half as many mistakes as GPT-5.6 Sol, while GPT-6 Luna at higher effort matches GPT-5.6 Sol at roughly a hundredth of its cost.
- OpenAI credits caching and inference improvements for the price cuts, and reports that daily token usage inside OpenAI now exceeds $600 at API prices for the median researcher and $7,000 for researchers at the 90th percentile.
Hacker News opinions
Love the price cuts across the major players. I assume Qwen4 getting announced is part of why we're seeing them.
There's no way this release wasn't meant to coincide with Anthropic's launch today.
Altman said it was launching last week on Twitter and they pushed it back to this week. If anything Anthropic would be the one timing a release, but I doubt that too.
Luna at $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 output is positively insane. The post says nothing about Azure or AWS availability though, and I'd like to know.
They're already on Bedrock, and Azure Foundry plus Copilot too.
Does the API price cut translate into higher allowance on the subscription? Does anyone actually know?
Opus 5.5 seems better? Can someone attach both scores?
Sol isn't the direct competitor to Opus 5.5, and it's 50% cheaper anyway.
Pricing is nuts. I can set Luna after a goal for 10 days and never hit the limits.
Why would you do that though? Long running /goal tasks are like letting a wild animal loose in your codebase. Does anyone care about code quality anymore?
I don't see how anyone stays on Claude at these prices. Sol is $2 in / $10 out against Opus 5 at $5 / $25.
Those prices don't necessarily reflect real costs. OpenAI is nowhere near profitable and may be buying the lead back by any means.
Batch processing is still 50% off on top of this, which puts Sol at $5 and Luna at $0.25 for output.
Per-token pricing matters less now with the tokenizer and thinking token changes. What you want to compare is cost per task.
Whatever the token prices say, I burned through usage way faster on Codex than Claude Code at comparable intelligence. Glad to be back on Claude.
Astra blows through usage limits too fast to be a daily driver, and Codex still can't show me what subagents are doing. I reason in Fable and spawn Opus subagents instead.
Do cache reads and writes also drop 50%? That's 95%+ of the cost in agentic coding workloads.
Don't forget the 1M token context. Past 272K input tokens, Sol is roughly Opus pricing and Astra is similar to Fable.
Claude still sells a $200/mo 20x plan while OpenAI's has been unavailable since Sept 11 with no ETA. That alone pushes heavy users back to Anthropic.
6 Sol performs worse than 5.6 Sol at DeepSwe? Weird.
