Honestly I think it's the team. Ex-OpenAI people who already shipped stuff and got buzz. VCs pay for that.
I don't get it either. I've sat in Toronto VC meetings and they grill you on the tech. A product with no moat that got copied in days at $7B? Feels like peak hype.
Hot companies in a boom have the leverage though. The hottest company picks the investors, not the other way around. Canadian VCs are just more conservative.
The 'nobody gets fired for buying IBM' effect is real. Buying the known name is the safe play for buyers and investors alike.
The lack of a moat matters less than people think. If they invented a new approach that caught on fast, they can probably do it again. Even a 10% shot at a slice of OpenAI's size is a good bet for a VC.
The API got copied, the results didn't. That's the whole argument, imo.
Investors want a piece of whoever could be the next breakout lab, and TypeSafe is near the top of that list. Writing an $870M check also makes the company more likely to win, which pulls in talent and customers.
Canadian investors are risk averse and they invest in pedigree more than tech. Bay Area VCs are way more willing to back out of the box challengers.
