'Dune: Part Three' Imax tickets crash the AMC app, with 'Doomsday' waiting on Dec. 18
- Premium-format tickets for Dune: Part Three went on sale midday Aug. 18 ahead of its Dec. 18 release, and the AMC Theatres app crashed within minutes as buyers scrambled for seats.
- Imax 70mm showings are already listed on resale sites for up to $2,500, and AMC CEO Adam Aron posted a public apology for tech glitches that left many buyers without tickets.
- Avengers: Doomsday opens the same Dec. 18 date, but Warner Bros. has locked U.S. Imax screens for Dune for at least the first three weeks, so Disney is pushing its new Infinity Vision premium large-format tickets to theaters that meet screen size and sound benchmarks.
- The first two Dune films grossed nearly $200 million combined on Imax screens, and Boxoffice Pro's Daniel Loria argues Dune should have opened in early December to avoid the Marvel title entirely.
- Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock expects the real fight to be premium-screen capacity once Dune's exclusive Imax window expires, with exhibitors moving Dolby Cinema and ScreenX screens toward Doomsday if it explodes.
