Warner Bros pushes Dune: Part Two from November 2023 to March 2024 as actors' strike blocks promotion
- Warner Bros moved Dune: Part Two from its November 2023 release to March 2024 because its stars cannot promote the film while the SAG-AFTRA strike continues.
- The new date takes the sequel out of the coming awards season: the Oscars submission deadline for general categories is 18 November 2023, with preliminary shortlist voting and results in December.
- Denis Villeneuve's first Dune film made over $400m worldwide and won six of its 10 Oscar nominations in 2021, all in technical categories (production design, cinematography, film editing, sound, visual effects, original score).
- Warner Bros also delayed Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire from 15 March to 12 April 2024, and pointed to Blue Beetle's $25m opening weekend as the weak result it wants to avoid given the size of its Dune investment.
- Other studios have shuffled schedules too: Sony delayed Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse indefinitely, and Disney reshuffled its upcoming Star Wars, Marvel and Avatar films.
